BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. –Technique and execution could be the difference in saving someone trapped or injured in water. The Central Jackson County (CJC) Fire Protection District is making sure its fire fighters and EMT’S have the proper training.
Inside the Centennial Pool Complex in Blue Springs, first responders practice techniques for removing a patient with possible spinal injuries, how to use the rope “throw” bags, and using the immersion suits and other tools to successfully rescue a patient from the water.
“The on duty crews, the guys that are in the stations everyday, they don’t really get to do this that much as far as training,” said Assistant Chief Eddie Saffell.
However, it’s training that could be the difference in saving a life.
“If we have an incident it’s just good to be aware of the little nuances of putting somebody on a backboard in the water, how to secure them, how to get them out of the pool or onto the bank or the deck,” said Saffell.
The special rescue team also has two rescue boats available for fast and calm water rescues.
