LAWRENCE, Kan. — Students at KU’s married housing facilities are locking their doors after residents are held at gunpoint during a weekend robbery.
The University of Kansas police told FOX 4 News they’ve arrested five men, all of whom are associated with a weekend robbery. Police say three of them broke into an on-campus apartment on Saturday night, and held the tenants at gunpoint while robbing them.
Just a thin apartment wall separated Kazi Abbas from a violent crime. University of Kansas police say it was late Saturday evening, when three men broke into an apartment inside Stoffer Place, KU’s married housing facility. One of them had a gun, and used it to rob a family.
Abbas says the same men visited his door only a few hours before the robbery, asking for someone who didn’t live there.
“He kind of glanced inside my apartment, and looked around a little bit,” Abbas said.
A few hours later, Abbas and his friends heard the police outside, but he says they didn’t hear the struggle next door, where a married couple and young child were being robbed.
“They told me there was a robbery at apartment nine, which is right beside my apartment, and I was shocked,” Abbas said. “I was pretty much shocked, wow.”
University of Kansas police say they’ve arrested five students, all of whom are charged with playing various roles in the robbery, or in planning it.
Those arrested are:
- Aaron Thomas, 19
- Thomas Hampton, 19
- Gabriel McKinney, 18
- Branson Glanton, 18
- Kalil Gray, 18
Capt. James Anguiano with KU’s Police Department says investigators were led to those five men by an anonymous tip.
“Law enforcement agencies are always grateful to individuals who reach out to us and give us information to help us. Sometimes, that first piece of information may be the first puzzle piece and then the puzzle can be completed,” Anguiano said.
Tenants at Stoffer Place say it’s a relief to them that police have made these arrests.
