KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Southbound I-29 closed at 64th Street Friday morning when a trash truck caught on fire at about 9 a.m..
The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating, but initial information indicates that the driver suffered a diabetic reaction and began weaving in and out of lanes.
Several drivers called 911 when they noticed the danger.
Sgt. Bill Lowe with the Highway Patrol said at one point the truck hit another car slightly. After a few minutes, a trooper got behind the truck, but the driver still didn’t stop. It then went off the roadway and hit a guardrail and caught fire.
Flames could be seen shooting out of the truck.
The driver was unresponsive and taken to an area hospital.
At 10 a.m. on Friday, traffic was getting through on one lane of I-29. It was reopened, all lanes moving, by the afternoon.
