OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Andrew Wiggins may not play for the Kansas Jayhawks anymore, but Sunday he was back on the court with Kansas Head Basketball Coach Bill Self.
The two teamed up to host a youth basketball camp that drew hundreds of kids from across the metro this weekend. Nearly 300 attended the Academy Sports + Outdoors Bill Self Basketball ProCamp at Shawnee Mission West High School in Overland Park.
For many kids and adults it was a Jayhawk fans dream.
“Just to be able to hang out with Bill Self and Wiggins is unbelievable,” said Justin Wensel, who drove in from Tonganoxie, Kansas so his six-year-old son could attend the camp.
The two day camp taught first through 12th graders the fundamentals of basketball.
Aspiring NBA player Keshun Blair, 14, came from Mississippi with his family to learn from the number one draft pick.
“I want to be like Wiggins,” he said. “I’m just here to get better and see Andrew Wiggins play.”
Coach Self said it wasn’t that long ago that Wiggins’ reality was still a dream.
“What he is, is he’s just one of these kids,” said Coach Self. “He just happens to be six foot eight making about $6.5 million a year, this year, that’s pretty different than most guys, but he’s really enjoying this.”
Thirty of the area’s top prep basketball coaches also helped put on the camp for more than 280 kids.
