INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Back in August 17 year-old Fort Osage junior Kristine Bodine knew exactly who her marketing class project was going to benefit. It’s an organization that is close to her heart, the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

“She’s an outstanding young lady, I have to give all the credit to her,” said Tracy Christie, the Marketing teacher at the Fort Osage Career and Technology Center.

In November she organized a walk for the Susan G. Komen foundation, raising $126. Bodine also put together a penny collecting contest that brought in $870 for the foundation.

“I know that she will grow with this and be sharing that message out in the community,” said Theresa Osenbaugh of the Kansas City chapter for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Through both fundraisers, Bondine was able to donate $1,000 to the cause.

” I woke up this morning and I was like wow, I get to give $1,000 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation,” said Bodine.  “I’m really going to help someone, really help someone out.”

Seventy-Five percent of that money will stay local to help woman without insurance for services like mammograms, treatment and other screenings.

Breast Cancer hits home for Bodine, both of her grandmothers fought the disease. One of them lost the battle ten years ago, the other is a survivor.

“I’m proud to say I love them both equally and this is just something I really wanted to do to help and make a change,” said Bodine.

The fundraising is just part of Bodine’s project for her marketing class. She is also writing a 30 paper documenting project. Christine will present her project at  a DECA competition in February.
