Millions of people will be traveling today for the Thanksgiving holidays, and if you’re driving, you’ll see relief not only on the roads, but also at the pump.

FOX 4’s Matt Stewart reported live near I-70 and 40 Highway in Independence where gas was $2.88 a gallon. That is the cheapest it has been for quite some time, about a quarter cheaper than it was this time last year, according to gasbuddy.com.

Low fuel prices are encouraging travelers to hit the roads. But despite the low fuel costs, Triple A expects fewer people to travel this Thanksgiving holiday than last year.

Of those who do leave town, 90 percent will be driving to their destination and most of those travelers will be leaving late Wednesday morning or during the early afternoon. That means if you are heading out of town, you’ll be sharing the road with 39 million other people driving to visit relatives and friends.

Police plan to have an increased presence Wednesday, so make sure you go the speed limit unless you want to risk getting pulled over. And officers will be diligent throughout the weekend to catch drunk drivers, hoping to prevent any fatal accidents.

But the best news continues to be the low gas prices. They’re the lowest in three years.

And Triple A expects them to stay this low through the end of the year, meaning those of you travelling for Christmas will also be able to spend less on gas than you have in years past.
