KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police are investigating after a Center Middle School student told police a man followed her home after she refused to get into his vehicle.
The girl told police it happened Wednesday, Feb. 12, around 2:30 p.m. near 103rd and Holmes in Kansas City, Mo. She said a man in a white four-door SUV pulled over and asked her if she wanted a ride. She said no and kept walking. According to the girl, the man pulled over and cursed at her. At that point, the girl told authorities she walked briskly home and called her mother.
“The predator came and he was trying to talk to her, trying to seduce her to get into the car and you know it’s a really scary situation you don’t know until it actually it’s home,” described Stephene Garrett, the girl’s aunt.
FOX 4’s Macradee Aegerter spoke with the bubbly, 13-year-old girl on Friday. In the video, we are not showing her face or revealing her name to protect her privacy and preserve her safety.
According to the girl, after she got off the phone with her mom, she heard a knock at the door. Through the peep hole she said she saw the same man who had harassed her. She said he tried to enter the home.
The girl reportedly went to a back room and waited for police.
“Bammed on the door, practically about to knock the door down, pushing his body weight up against the door,” said Garrett.
The suspect is described as a black male between 30-40 years of age with short hair. The girl says he was driving a white four-door Toyota.
The girl’s family says they are now taking turns picking her up from school.
“We live in a day and time when people aren’t thinking rationally,” Garrett said. “”We don’t feel comfortable with her walking home so we have to do everything we can to protect her.”
