BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. — It was a random act of kindness and it may have saved a woman’s life. On January 30, 55-year-old Mark Golden was driving eastbound on Interstate-70 and about to exit onto Lee’s Summit Road.
As he pulled off, he saw a woman on the ground and a man on top of her who was beating her with his fists.
“I saw there was a problem and I thought maybe she needs help,” Golden said.
Golden’s instinct was correct. He said initially he saw an SUV swerving in traffic that caught his attention, which was followed by the assault.
“The passenger was a large male, and he jumped out of the car as soon as she did and ran around the front of the car to her,” Golden said.
Golden said he saw the man hit the woman, and she fell to the ground.
“Before she had a chance to get up, he was on top of her beating her face pretty good,” Golden said.
Golden said that’s when he called 9-1-1, and along with two other drivers, pulled over in his flatbed truck to help the woman.
“I think he probably would have finished her off if somebody wouldn’t have been there. He got in his car and left,” Golden said.
Documents from the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office state the man charged in the beating is 38-year-old Robert Tyus, who lives in Blue Springs. Those same records say the woman’s face was cut, bruised and swollen from the pummeling.
“She was holding her hands up trying to fight him off and trying to get away from him,” Golden said.
Tyus is now being held in the Jackson County Detention Center on a $100,000. As for Golden, he insisted that he’s no big shot, he merely stepped in to help.
“I wasn’t a hero. I just helped. I would expect someone to do that for me or someone to do that for one of my family members. That’s not something you’re a hero for,” Golden said.
Court records show Tyus is charged with two different forms of assault and Kansas City police arrested him on Wednesday. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on February 19.
