HOUSTON — A dog in Texas, who was discovered lying on middle of a lane on the freeway, is alive and recovering thanks to a man who coaxed her to safety using his lunch.

After hearing about the yellow lab mix being spotted in the middle an outbound lane of the highway on the radio, contractor and Good Samaritan, Rickey Young, was first to respond and offer his help at the scene. At first the dog, which turned out to be badly injured, was skittish and tried to back away from Young. Then Young decided to use a sandwich he had to coax the dog over to him. He then picked her up and got her inside of his truck.

“I’m just kind of a softy on that stuff,” Young told KHOU in Houston, Texas. “I have a dog and would hate to see him on a highway like that.”

Young, who said the dog seemed thankful to be in a safer environment, took her to the Houston SPCA. There a veterinarian said Young’s actions could’ve made all the difference in the world for the canine. The vet said she suffered from multiple broken bones and was bleeding internally, and more than likely would’ve died on the road from her injuries had no one been there to help her.

It is believed the dog is a stray because she did not have a microchip or a collar when she was found. She has undergone surgery and treatment for her injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.
