KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Friends and family gathered outside the KCK house where four people were killed Monday night. Their grief mixed with anger that the man charged in the murders is in the United States illegally.
At issue is how the alleged shooter remained in the U.S. when he had previously been deported, and had been in police custody several times. Many showed up in honor of the four lives lost. Folks showed up in T-shirts honoring their slain loved ones, as they sent their prayers above.
Police have yet to release the motive for the killings, but those who loved the men who died call the killings senseless. Police arrested Pablo, Serrano-Vitorino in Montgomery County, Mo., who they say carried out the deadly shooting, before killing a fifth man in New Florence, Missouri.
Serrano-Vitorino was deported back in 2004, but snuck back into the U.S.
He had two run-ins with the law where immigration enforcement was contacted, but because of a failure in the system, Serrano-Vitorino was free.
“It just sucks that something like that could happen despite someone`s mistake, that shouldn`t even happen,” said Ruth Harter.
“My husband would have been there if they would have done it correctly,” said Harter.
“We would love to discuss with ICE why it`s happened and I wish I had a say in making sure that it doesn`t happen again,” said Wyandotte County District Attorney Jerome Gorman.
The county will begin an investigation with the ATF to determine how Sorrano-Vitorino got the gun they believed was used in the shooting.
