KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The parents of Aydan Perea finally took their young son off of life-support on Thursday, as the final hopes of a miracle slipped away six days after the child was shot in the head while he was visiting a relatives house.
Perea, just four years old, was declared brain dead earlier this week, but was kept on life support so that his family could donate his organs to those in need.
He was shot in a drive-by shooting last Saturday night while he sat in his car seat in his father’s car in the driveway of his aunt’s home near 24th and Denver. Perea was shot once in the head.
Kansas City Missouri Police are still searching for the gunmen.
“He was a beautiful boy, handsome, strong,” said his father, Sergio Perea. “He was always happy. He always loved me.”
“I don’t think it’s fully hit me, like hit me, that my son is actually gone and I’m gonna be burying my son. It’s heart-wrenching,” said Perea.
The only comfort for the family is knowing that their son’s donated organs will go to help give seven other children the gift of life this Christmas.
“My son’s heart is going to a 7-year-old girl in Texas. That gives me some kind of peace,” said Perea.
