KANSAS CITY, Mo. — All weekend long people across the country have been holding Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday by serving their communities.
One way Kansas Citians are giving back is by helping Harvesters Food Bank — the only food bank in the area.

The organization serves 26 counties and provides food to 66,000 people every week.
“That’s a lot of people who may not know for sure if they are going to have food next week or at the end of the week or maybe even tomorrow,” Ellen Feldhausen said.
Sunday and Monday, visitors are the College Basketball Experience can bring four non-perishable can or boxed food items and enjoy the experience for just $6.
“We know about 38 percent of the people we serve have told us they’ve had to choose between paying the utilities, paying the heat and paying for food,” Feldhausen said.
You can also help Harvesters by visiting one of the restaurants participating in Kansas City’s Restaurant Week — like Julian’s.
“Some people say, ‘Well, it’s only 5 percent — what is that going to do?’ You add it all up for 130 restaurants that are participating — 5 percent for 10 days really is substantial and it makes a huge impact for our own community,” chef and Julian’s owner Celina Tio said.
