Some die-hard Royals fans were flying out to San Francisco Friday morning to be there in person to see the World Series games this weekend.
FOX 4’s Matt Stewart was live at KCI finding the lucky travelers and talking to them about the reasons behind their last-minute trip.
He met Stacy Porto and her mom as they were getting ready to board their flight. (Watch in the video player above.)
They said they were mainly going for their dad and husband, who loved the Royals but is no longer with them.
“He passed away six years ago. We still have a bottle of champagne he got in 1985 that says, ‘Don’t open until the Royals win the World Series’, so a lot of it I think is probably going for him, too,” said Stacy Porto.
If (When!) the Royals win, they plan to open that bottle of champagne and toast the Royals, toast Stacy’s dad.
“It might not taste very good anyway, but we’re going to open it.”
FOX 4’s Matt Stewart also met pals Chuck and Joe dressed in their Royal blue and asked them what led to their decision to hop on a plane to San Francisco.
“Lifelong Royals fan. Literally waited our entire lives to see them in the World Series. I don’t remember it. I was three the last time they were there so really couldn’t miss the opportunity to go out there and see them,” said Joe.
Friend Chuck described their quick decision to just do it.
“Right after they clinched, he called me up and said, You want to go to San Francisco? and I said absolutely. So I booked the flight we had to get tickets through a ticket broker. We had the hotel already booked. Like he said, when an opportunity comes along, you gotta take it, he said.
“Can’t put a pricetag on a lifetime experience,” said Joe. “I told them I’d rent a kayak if I needed to.”
And Mark from Lenexa, carrying a crown that illuminates, expressed the same Carpe Diem attitude.
“The Royals, I love them. It’s once in a lifetime. You have to do it,” he said.
