KANSAS CITY, Mo. – There are devices you can buy to shorten window blind cords to prevent a horrible tragedy with window covering cords from happening in your home, but there are a number of other accidents that can happen because of dangers hidden inside what is supposed to be the safest place for kids.
Joanie Whitman loves all kids, not just the four who are her own. That’s why she makes a living keeping them safe through her company, “The Soft Landing.”
Her big four tips include gates at the top and bottom of the stairs, cabinet locks, cord gatherers for blinds and making sure T.V.s and heavy furniture can’t tip over onto kids.
Whitman says there’s no substitute for a parent’s watchful eyes, so don’t leave your child’s safety up to the gadgets.
Whitman says chemicals are a huge concern too. Sprays like bathroom and window cleaners can be inhaled, and even make up and some lotions can be toxic if a child ingests them, and of course the chemicals under the sink or in the cleaning closet can always pose risks.
