KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Two people are in custody after a shooting in Kansas City, Kan.
Police said the two men were suspected of shooting a man when he tried to prevent them from stealing his car near 74th & Oakland in Kansas City, Kan., Thursday morning. Police said the man was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police initially reported the incident as a home invasion, however after further investigation, police determined the man was shot when he confronted the would-be thieves.
“[He] heard the car leaving, trying to leave the driveway,” Thomas Tomasic, KCK police officer said. “Suspects had gotten in and tried to steal the car. At that time the homeowner came out confronted the suspects. Suspect and homeowner got into a gunfight, shooting at each other.”
Police said the homeowner had left the car engine running.
The two suspects, described as black males, bailed from the four-door silver car in the middle of the street and took off running. Police tried to track them down with their canine unit but had no luck. They were later apprehended in a second-floor apartment at the Legend Oaks Apartment building. Police said one man was hiding when detectives made their first arrest.
