EAST LAMPETER TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A family of five traveling in an Amish buggy said they heard a firecracker type sound when a vehicle passed the buggy on Sunday night. Unaware, but not yet unsettled, they continued to their family farm that was approximately one mile away and made a gruesome discovery upon arrival.

The horse pulling the buggy was bleeding from the mouth and they discovered a gunshot wound in the left chest area. The horse died before a veterinarian could make it to the farm.

All five occupants of the buggy, including three children, were unharmed in the incident. The incident occurred at about 9 p.m., which made it difficult for the family to describe the suspected vehicle. Now police are left searching for clues, one that spoke with TV station WPMT said he hadn’t seen the Amish targeted by violence like this in his 30 years on the force.
