VICTORIA, Tex. — A Texas hospital has a policy that they will no longer hire obese people. The policy was instituted in 2011 at the Citizens Medical Center in Victoria, Tex.
The policy requires potential employees to have a body mass index of less than 35.
The hospital says an employees physique should “fit with a representational image or specific mental projection of the job of a health care professional.”
Other cities have also enacted weight discrimination laws including Birmingham, New York, Madison, Wisconsin, San Francisco, Ca. Washington D.C. and more.
Officials at the equal employment opportunity commission say the practice is not explicitly discriminatory.
