LENEXA, Kan. – Golfers, dressed in an array of costumes, played in a foot of snow for a good cause at a Lenexa golf course.
On Saturday it was hard to spot much green on the golf course at Smiley’s Golf Complex, but there were some waddling penguins and superheroes and to be seen. It was the 11th Annual Idiots Open Golf Tournament benefitting Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care.
“We are idiots, trust me (laughing),” said golfer John Rodriguez.
“The way we’re dressed I would say we look fantastic, they should call it the fantastic looking gentlemen’s open,” said another golfer, Justin Schlitzer.”We’re showing people that charity can be fun even in the cold you can go mess around in the cold, freezing for a reason I think that’s our team motto.”
The $25,000 the event hoped to raise will help the uninsured and underinsured, among others, get end of life care.
“To me hospice is about giving peace of mind at the end of life so the person can die with dignity and that they don’t need to die alone and they’re surrounded by people that care for them and love them,” said Carol Barnett with Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care
Teams traded golf balls for tennis balls, clubs for tennis racquets, and even bow and arrows. A foot of snow was the biggest hazard on this course. The tournament turned out to be a good time for a great cause.
