INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Independence police say a mother was carjacked and robbed at gunpoint in broad daylight over the weekend.

The victim, Melony McCaughey, 39, says it happened to her and her teenage son right outside their home.

“Him coming back, him coming back. Luckily, I don’t live at that house,” she said, when asked about her worst fears. “They followed me to my house. It happened in my drive-way.”

The victim is now putting up her own reward.

On Tuesday it had been three days since McCaughey says four guys in a black sedan first tried to rear-end her car at Truman and Rogers Road in Independence. Minutes later, she was startled after seeing the men pull up at her house.

The scared mom says the driver got out, walked to her car, pointed a silver gun at her chest and demanded her brand new Dodge Charger. McCaughey says he then pointed the gun at her 14-year-old son, who ran outside after hearing the commotion.

“And I’m still sitting face forward in my vehicle and really not a whole lot I can do,” said McCaughey. “It’s pretty traumatic experience to have somebody follow you into your drive-way and put you at gunpoint and then steal your vehicle and point a gun at your son.”

The mother and son weren’t hurt. They were in the process of moving before the carjacking.

Melony’s now offering a $1,000 reward, hoping it will lead to carjackers’ arrests.

About two hours after the carjacking police found McCaughey’s stolen car at 67th and the Paseo in Kansas City. The carjackers haven’t been caught and that’s why the independence mom is still afraid.

“I can’t sleep. I’m sleeping by the door,” said McCaughey. “I want them caught. That’s a life-changing experience, one I’ll never get over.”
