INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Police have identified the victim of a deadly hit-and-run incident in Independence on Friday night.
Aaron C. Overman, 34, of Buckner, Missouri, was killed when the car he was driving was struck from behind by a truck while he stopped at a red light at the intersection of US 24 and Blue Mills around 9:15 on Friday night.
The driver of the pickup truck, identified only as a 21-year-old male, fled the scene of the wreck on foot. He was later arrested in Sibley, Missouri, on Saturday and is expected to be arraigned in Jackson County Court in Independence on Monday.
On Sunday evening, friends, family and well-wishers gathered at the scene of the crash for a prayer vigil. They say that Overman was a hard-working postal worker who loved going shooting.
“I felt kind of sad for them because they just lost a family member,” said 11-year-old Keili Key, who brought flowers to the vigil and whose father actually witnessed the crash. “I thought it would be really nice to give them some flowers just to remember him.”
