INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Police are still looking for a gunman who shot at a moving car on Interstate 70 on Sunday night, injuring a seven-year-old girl and a male driver. Police say the shooting is not a random crime, and in the meantime, relatives say the innocent child remains at the hospital.

The good news is that relatives say the little girl is expected to survive, which comes as a relief following the shooting that happened at about 6:30 Sunday night on I-70 near 291 Highway and Noland Road.

A source close to the family says the child and her mother’s boyfriend were traveling westbound. Within minutes, police say occupants in a gold-colored car drove up to the victims’ vehicle, opened fire and sped away.

Investigators say the driver, who suffered a minor injury, suddenly pulled off the interstate, drove to a QuikTrip on Noland Road and called 911. Police say the driver was treated for his injury and released from the hospital.

Police say the crime was not random and they believe an argument between occupants in both cars may have sparked the double-shooting that’s left the innocent girl in the hospital.

Police say the child is in stable condition. They’re asking anyone with information about the double-shooting to call Independence police or the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-TIPS.
