INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — A mother continues to try to raise money to add to the award fund offered for help finding and prosecuting her son’s killer.
Corey Laykovich was 22-years-old when he was stabbed in July 2013, likely while he was walking back to his Independence home at about 2 a.m. His brother alerted his family when he noticed Corey was breathing with difficulty. They found him bleeding in bed and called 911, but Corey died a few hours later.
The person who stabbed him has never been identified.
“Why would they have done this? What was their motivation? Could it be the person who lives next door? Could it be the person who lives across the street?” asked Michelle Metje, Corey’s grieving mother.
With another $500 recently added, the reward fund is up to $8,500, and Metje hopes it is the push someone needs to supply the police with information.
“That extra five-hundred dollars, and in this case, that eight-thousand five-hundred dollars is going to be that one thing that puts them over that edge,” said Metje.
Metje started a group called “Corey’s Network” to help the families of other victims. She said she’ll continue to try to sell a book she wrote and T-shirts to raise money for Corey’s reward fund.
