SANFORD, Fla. — A Florida judge on Friday revoked bond for George Zimmerman, who is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Trayvon Martin, ordering him to surrender within 48 hours.
In April, Seminole County Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester Jr. set bond at $150,000 bond and also ordered that Zimmerman must be electronically monitored, must avoid alcohol and can not have contact with the victim’s family.
On Friday, Lester revoked Zimmerman’s bond, accusing him of misrepresenting how much money he had when his bond was originally set. Prosecutors had also accused Zimmerman of “misleading and deceiving” the court over whether or not he had a U.S. passport.
In a case that has caused controversy across the nation, Zimmerman faces a trial on second-degree murder charges in the shooting death of Martin. Zimmerman says he shot Martin in self-defense when the 17-year-old attacked him in his Florida neighborhood. Authorities and Martin’s family say that Zimmerman racially profiled Martin as the teen walked home from a local convenience store.
Zimmerman apologized to Martin’s family while in court on April 20.
“I wanted to say I am sorry for the loss of your son. I did not know how old he was, I thought he was a little bit younger than I am and I did not know if he was armed,” said Zimmerman.
Zimmerman’s wife, mother and father testified over the phone that he isn’t a flight risk.
