KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Jackson County jury returned guilty verdicts for six felony counts against Derek Hubbard on Wednesday. The jury found that Hubbard shot and killed his ex-girlfriend, Stephanie Brown, and also shot her cousin Anthony Richardson and his wife, Mary Richardson, on November, 11, 2011.

Hubbard’s convictions include a charge for first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree murder and three counts of armed criminal action.

Shanta Davis, Stephanie Brown’s daughter, told FOX 4 at the time the case was initially being investigated that Hubbard had dated her mom for a short time, but Hubbard was abusive and had put Brown in the hospital. She said the shooting was the result of a domestic disturbance where Hubbard came to a home the victims were at, unannounced.

“He was trying to make my mom go with him and my mom was saying no,” Davis told FOX 4. “She wasn’t going to go and he was trying to make her, which made Anthony intervene.”

Anthony Richardson reportedly tried to defend Brown from Hubbard by hitting him in the head with a jewelry box, which is when he was shot twice in the chest. Hubbard then turned the gun on the women, fatally shooting Brown in the head and Mary Richardson in the mouth according to court documents.

Davis told FOX 4 she was thankful for Anthony Richardson’s bravery, even though the tragedy ensued.

“I’m grateful that Anthony did intervene. I’m sorry for the loss of him and his wife, but I’m grateful that he wasn’t able to take my mom out and we wouldn’t know where her body was or anything like that,” she said. “We wouldn’t know what was going on, whether he could’ve taken her, and held her or tortured her for days.”

Police say Hubbard turned himself in two days later, arriving to a police station in a red Kia that belonged to Brown, which he drove away from the crime scene.

Hubbard is set to be sentenced on September 19.
