KANSAS CITY, Kan. — It’s Election Day on both sides of the state line, and on each side voters will have to make some big decisions.
In Kansas City, Kansas voters will elect a new mayor as Mayor Joe Reardon is retiring after serving two terms. The two candidates vying for the mayoral position: Mark Holland and Ann Murguia. They both currently serve as city commissioners in Wyandotte County.
In Kansas City, Mo., voters will have to answer three important questions on the Missouri Special Election ballot.
The first question is whether Kansas City, Mo., should renew the 22 cent healthcare property tax. This would extend the tax for 9 years and raise $15 million each year to help pay the medical expenses of the city’s neediest residents. The money will specifically go toward Truman Medical Center, ambulance services and non-profit health clinics.
The second question on the ballot: should most non-profit groups be required to pay an existing city hotel convention tax? Currently some groups are exempt from paying the 7.5 percent sales tax at hotels and motels.
Lastly, voters have to decide whether Kansas City, Mo., should prohibit city assistance to businesses who supply the National Nuclear Security Administration. This includes facilities that produce, assemble of refurbish nuclear weapons.
Polls will be open until 7 p.m. in both Missouri and Kansas.
