KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Rick Santorum has won the Kansas caucus. He visited Lenexa, Wichita and Topeka earlier this week.
Ron Paul and representatives for other candidates spent the day in Johnson County hoping to sway voters. Paul was the only candidate to make an appearance in person on Saturday. Despite not winning any primaries he says he’s still in the race.
“It’s a long way from being over now so we’re still very much of a player in it,” Republican candidate Paul said.
The theme was echoed by Kathy Gingrich Lubbers who stumped on behalf of her father New Gingrich. She says this race will be won on issues. Fore her father, it’s about oil…opening up key pipelines, drilling and cutting.
“It helps with our economic freedom because cash will flow because jobs will be created,” Gingrich-Lubbers said. “It helps with our energy independence, and it helps with our national security so that we don’t have to bow to a saudi prince.”
Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney hope to fare well, Santorum was in Lenexa before the primaries. He and Romney called on local supporters to speak for them.
“He turned companies around created thousands of jobs and I believe that’s great credentials for him to attack the economic problems of our country,” said Romney spokesperson Chad Rowe.
A Santorum spokesperson compared him to previous Republican presidents.
“The same people who told us Ronald Reagan was too conservative, and the same people that told us W could never be elected because he was too conservative, they’re now telling us the same thing about Santorum,” said spokesperson Frank Kessler. “I guess we should be happy. That means he’s going to get the nomination.”
The nomination won’t be won or lost in Kansas but it could help with momentum. We will see how much it will help at the Republican convention.
