MERRIAM, Kan. — As more men start thinking about getting a gift for that special someone for Valentine’s Day, you may be surprised to learn that nationwide two of the most popular Valentine’s Day gifts come from a Kansas City-based company.

The next three days, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, are the busiest days of the year for Russell Stover.

The company says it will sell as much candy as it does during the entire month of December in these next few days.

That’s because Russell Stover sells the two most popular heart-shaped boxes of chocolates in the nation. The company also says it produces seven out of the top ten Valentine’s Day gifts.

$2 billion is spent on confections for Valentine’s Day, and this Kansas City company gets more than its fair share.

But as popular as chocolates remain, Russell Stover says more people are turning to one of the company’s specialties; chocolate covered strawberries.

“We sell an amazing amount of chocolate covered strawberries,” said Christi Jones of Russell Stover. “In fact this store and the other five stores in the Kansas City area will dip over 50,000 strawberries in the next few days.”

A 10-pack of chocolate covered strawberries sells for less than $30. And it seems no matter how tight the times are, people always can justify chocolate as an affordable splurge.

Now many men and other procrastinators have a good reason to wait until Friday to buy their Valentine’s Day gift. Russell Stover says chocolate-covered strawberries are best eaten on the day you buy them.
