KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The youngest man ever diagnosed with breast cancer lives in the metro. Doctors diagnosed Bret Miller with breast cancer in 2010 when he was just 24.
After his diagnosis and recovery, Bret Miller started the Check Them Foundation check them.Org and uses it to spread awareness about men’s breast cancer.
On Thursday, Mayor Sly James is expected to honor Miller with a resolution that will declare april “Male Breast Cancer Awareness Month.”
Each year 2,400 men learn they have breast cancer. Miller and his team produced a video to show men how to check their breasts. Many men are embarrassed to admit they have breast cancer, so a new website designed by Miller’s brother is helping other men share their stories.
“It’s helped them be more at ease, through this, knowing they can get through this,” Miller said.
After Miller receives his award on Thursday during the legislative session, he and his mother will be flying to Los Angeles to appear on The Doctor’s show. He’s also appeared on the Katie Couric show.
