KANSAS CITY, KS — Superstorm Sandy washed out 300 blood drives in 14 states along the East Coast, causing a shortfall of 9,000 units of blood.
Now, Kansas City residents are now donating to help fill that need. Two blood drives in the Kansas City area were already scheduled for today, but Sandy has gotten extra donors out.
” I just like to help any way I can,” said Michelle Dixon. ” So I thought what a good way to help.”
The Red Cross is also training six volunteers who could be sent to the East Coast to run shelters for victims. The Red Cross spent this afternoon going through some final pieces of information with those who are ready to help on the ground.
“We have not gotten the official word to actually deploy folks that we called yesterday, we are just trying to get ready,” said Red Cross volunteer JoAnne Woody.
