TOPEKA, Kan. — A Kansas Vision Card recipient is using her food stamps to enjoy foods she normally couldn’t afford.
Jennifer Taylor tells Topeka’s Fox affiliate that she uses her Vision Card to buy vegetable seeds early in the growing season, so that they can reap benefits throughout the year.
Taylor says, “I tell rich people and poor people, I don’t care who you are, you know somebody who gets food stamps. You can have fresh vegetables all summer long, into the fall.”
Taylor utilizes a neighboring community garden to extend her savings further; she recommends people without access to one to consider container gardening.
The Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitative Services says many farmer’s markets around Kansas accept the cards for plants and seeds. To find out more about the program, click here.
