KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Sunday worshipers met in churches across the metro to celebrate Easter, but resurrection Sunday held extra meaning for one church in particular.
Kingdom Word Ministries in Kansas City, Missouri burned earlier this year. But on Sunday the congregation was back together for a very special worship service.
Otha Minton has been attending Kingdom Word Ministries for more than 50 years.
“I have a love of this church,” she said.
The church that had been at 33rd and Cypress for more than 50 years was destroyed in a fire last February. On Sunday, Minton and the rest of the congregation sang just a little bit louder in praise after literally rising from the ashes.
“You get a call that early in the morning, most of the time it is not good news,” said Bishop Eric Morrison.
The fire started in the basement, but the exact cause was never determined. And while the building is still standing, nothing could be saved inside. Bishop Morrison said his congregation has since been raised up, having found a temporary place to worship in a vacant church just a few miles away.
“It has been awesome. It’s not home, but it is a place where the people of kingdom word have come together,” said Bishop Morrison.
The windows of the burned church won’t be boarded up much longer.
“We’re going to build, we’re going to build. We don’t give up that easy, we’re going to build,” said Minton.
Bishop Morrison said nothing will keep them from preaching them gospel. The church has insurance to cover the costs to rebuild, and Morrison hopes to re-open by Thanksgiving.
“They are like if we have to set a tent up outside stand under umbrellas whatever it take bishop, let’s keep pressing forward,” he said.
