KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Disappointment was the sentiment at a Kansas City rally Sunday night. The rally was in response to the not guilty verdict in the George Zimmerman trial in Florida.
More than 50 people filled the park right by the Spirit of Freedom Fountain. A first step they said is to change what is wrong with the system.
Many emotional speakers were featured as a part of the demonstration organized by Gatekeepers of KC.
People of all ages and backgrounds came to the rally, some held up homemade signs.
They say they are upset, not just about the verdict, but with many issues, including the struggle with racial profiling.
“There has to be something that sticks that is a platform to continue going on, man. So that we can have young black men that are ok walking the streets if we want to,” said Jesse Blakey of Kansas City, Kan.
The next step for the group is to learn Missouri’s stand your ground law. They say if Missouri’s law has to be amended, they’ll take the fight to lawmakers.
Zimmerman’s lawyers have said their client is no racist and this is the judicial system at work. Obviously, the folks at the rally disagree.
Another rally is scheduled to be held at the park Monday night at 6:00.
