KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Who’s got the best band in the land? With bragging rights on the line Saturday local bands and drill teams took to the field with something to prove.
It was the inaugural Kansas City, Missouri Public Schools “Battle of the Bands.”
They’ve got rhythm. Their own unique style and a whole lot of flair.
“Music is my passion and thats what wakes me up every morning. That’s what I want to do that’s what I shall be doing for the rest of my life,” explained Schlagle High School’s Wendy Galvan.
Nine local bands and drill teams from metro schools spent Saturday drumming, twirling and playing to impress.
“It’s never a competition, but it is a competition the guys are going to be out here battling. The ladies are going to be out here battling showing why you know their school is the best,” said KCPS Director of Athletics Michael Watson, Jr.
The band is what’s bringing out the best in one Schlagle High School senior. Galvan said she hopes to continue as a drum major in college.
“Being a part of this band has changed my life completely. I went from the bottom of the ditch all the way to the top. All it took was hard work and motivation from the best band director in this land,” she told FOX 4 News.
One sophomore twirler is also focused on her future.
“It’s very awesome. It gives me so much confidence and I love to excite people. So when I twirl, I love being able to excite the audience,” said Khadejah Ross.
Saturday’s contest proves music is striking a chord with students who say battling it out is just a perk from getting to do what they love.
The famed Grambling State University Tiger Marching Band is in the metro and will play during half time at Sunday’s Chiefs home opener. The band was scheduled to take part in Saturday’s “Battle of the Bands” but organizers told FOX 4 News, because of a conflict the band wasn’t able to attend.
