KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Last week’s cold weather snap brought hundreds of pets to area shelters.

Animal control officers and individuals brought in stray pets just so they would be able to survive.  Because of the increase in pets, the cost to adopt is going down.

An eight-week-old Boxer puppy named, Streusel, has been through a lot during her short life. She was found among a few other dogs outside in the cold.

“They were found outside in the extreme weather. She has been living outside ever since she was born.  We are amazed that she was able to survive,” said Tori Fugate with the Kansas City Pet Project.

Streusel was among hundreds of animals rescued from last week’s cold. She now has an adoptive family now, but many more do not.

The cats at the Zona Rosa KC Pet Project have been practically begging to get out and play.

“We had a cat that was found outside of our main shelter that was completely starved. Her body temp was so low,” said Fugate.

As a result, specials through the month can get you an adult cat for only 25 dollars.  Dogs who weigh more than forty pounds are just $40, and there are a lot to choose from.

Last year kc pet project cared for a record breaking 8,800 pets, and found homes for around 6,900 of them.

Although January is typically a slower month for animal adoptions, people and pets at the shelter hope to change that.

“We anticipate that 2014 will be another big year for us. A lot of intakes so we are going to need the communities help more than ever in order to find all these pets homes,” said Fugate.
