KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City International Airport reopened at 1 a.m. Friday morning and airlines immediately went to work trying to get people on board after more than 250 flights were cancelled due to the snowstorm.
Like the streets and highways, it took time to remove the snow from the runways so planes could land and take off.
The airport was practically deserted on Thursday. Many of those who had flights ended up checking in at the nearby hotel and waiting for today.
“We didn’t really know what was going to happen when we seen all the shuttle buses quit coming and we thought, oh no, we’re stuck here. We’re going to have to sleep here. And finally our van came and we left and it’s just hectic, not something you want to do. And now you’re going to Florida. Now we’re going to Florida to get over it,” said Kyleigh Brookman.
The airlines cancelled more than 50 flights Friday since all the planes that were supposed to be here were not, since they had been re-routed Thursday during the storm.
But now things are running pretty smoothly.
At last check, all the flights in and out were on time – except for those coming or going to Chicago, since that’s where the snow storm is right now.
One Kansas City family told FOX 4 they were supposed to have been in Florida on Thursday…but the snow delayed those plans by a day.
“We had a hard time trying to arrange our flights to get it changed for today, we waited here for an hour just to get out of here and then realized it just wasn’t going to happen, so today we’re going to do it,” said Murray Brookman.
The hope is they’ll be caught up with all the passengers by the end of today – but of course, with another snow storm coming this weekend, there could be more delays and flight cancellations at the beginning of next week.
