KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Beginning Thursday, Jan. 9, Kansas City International Airport will operate out of two terminals, Terminal B and C.

With several airlines merging in recent years — most recently American and US Airways — there are now fewer airlines needing their own space for ticketing, baggage claim and security for flights.

Currently, the only airline operating out of Terminal A is US Airways, and they will be combining their operations with American at Terminal C.

Airport officials say the closing of Terminal A should save the airport around $2 million a year in operating and bus-related costs. City officials are in the middle of an 18-month study to decide whether to build a new airport. If approved, Terminal A would be demolished and a new $1.2 billion dollar airport would be built. If it’s not approved, Terminal A will stay vacant until the need arises to re-open it.

And if it ever does re-open, the 40-year old building will need to be upgraded, which would cost tens of millions of dollars.
