The suspect in Friday night’s triple shooting has turned himself into police. Derek Hubbard, 46, has been charged with three counts of murder, three counts of armed criminal action and robbery.

Witnesses say 50-year-old Richard Anderson tried to stand up for his cousin when her ex-boyfriend turned abusive. That’s when prosecutors say the boyfriend turned his gun on Anderson, Anderson’s wife and the cousin he was trying to protect.

“She dated him for a short period of time,” said Shanta Davis, victim’s daughter. “He jumped on her real bad about two months ago.”

Shanta Davis says her mother Stephanie Brown was hospitalized from the last attack. Friday night she was at the home of Anthony and Mary Richardson. They were cousins by marriage. Witnesses say Derek Hubbard unexpectedly showed up.

“He was trying to make my mom go with him and my mom was saying no,” Davis said. “She wasn’t going to and he was trying to make her which made Anthony intervened.”

According to court documents, Richardson tried to hit Hubbard on the head with a jewelry box but was shot twice in the chest. Then police say Hubbard shot Brown in the head and Anderson’s wife in the mouth.

“I’m grateful and I’m thankful that Anthony did intervene,” Davis said. “I’m sorry for the loss of him and his wife,  but I’m grateful that he wasn’t able to take my mom out and we wouldn’t know where her body was or anything like that. We wouldn’t know what was going on whether he could’ve take her and held her or tortured her for days.”

Davis is convinced Hubbard wanted to take her mother and kill her somewhere else.

Derek Hubbard was last seen speeding away in a red Kia that belonged to his ex-girlfriend Stephanie Brown. When he turned himself in two days later, police say he was still driving the Red Kia.

One of the victims, Richard Anderson, was a boyhood friend of Kansas City Police Chief Daryl Forte. Relatives say he and his wife had just moved back to Kansas City from Texas about two months ago.
