KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The sound of gunshots rang out in a Waldo-area neighborhood Saturday afternoon, leaving one man dead.
Police said they have one person in custody.
What is described as a quiet neighborhood was lined with police tape on Saturday.
“We were just sitting out here and what I thought were fireworks, is what I heard two like two little bangs,” said Amy Davila.
Two bangs and police flooded the residential area around 3:00 p.m. on 78th Street near Main Street.
“The only reason why we came out is because I saw the ambulance and the cops and then that’s when we noticed that there was a lot more going on,” Davila told FOX 4 News.
Police said when they got there, a white male victim in his 50’s had apparently been shot and killed. His body was lying in front of one of the homes. The medical examiner’s office was also on the scene.
But police said witnesses got a pretty good look at the suspected shooter. Witnesses told police he ran south.
“They had a suspect description and we did locate a party that matched the suspect description a few blocks away,” Capt. Tye Grant, KCMO Police Department spokesperson told FOX 4 News.
The suspect, a black male in his 30’s, was arrested.
Officers combed the crime scene, trying to figure out what led up to the shooting.
Meanwhile, curious neighbors were sharing what they knew was going on down the street.
“There’s a lot of people down the street a little bit that’s been moving out or moving in and stuff like that,” Davila said.
Police said that might have something to do with the incident. Officers said they think there was some sort of disagreement with the people moving in and out. But they are still investigating.
They said it appears just one person lived at the house and that the victim did not live there.
No word yet on the relationship between the victim to the person who lived at the house or the alleged shooter.
There are only a few details so far, saddening for those who live nearby.
“I mean I just feel so bad for that person who lost their life over something so stupid,” Davila said.
