LAWRENCE, Kan. — Students in Lawrence, Kan., will gather Saturday, May 3 for the first local Out of the Darkness campus walk presented by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

This spring, survivors of suicide loss across the country will walk, tell their stories, honor a lost loved one, or share a hug; and in the process, raise thousands of dollars to fund suicide awareness and prevention projects for teens and young adults throughout Missouri and Kansas. Walk chair Amanda Rixey says “she wants to make college students aware of how important prevention and awareness is among students today.”

The KU Out of the Darkness Campus Walk is being held in the parking lot of Recreation Center on the KU Campus on Saturday May 3. Check-in time begins at 9:30 a.m.

The Greater Kansas Chapter of AFSP will use much of the funds to directly benefit school aged teens and young adults in the Greater Kansas area. More Than Sad: Teen Depression, Suicide Prevention Education for Teachers, After a Suicide: A Toolkit for Schools and The Truth about Suicide: Real Stories of Depression in College are being distributed locally and having a positive impact. The Interactive Screening Program, AFSP’s signature prevention program, is a web-based method for anonymously connecting at-risk college students to a counselor.
