3 members of Lee’s Summit family killed in crash near Hays

HAYS, Kan. – Six members of a Lee’s Summit, Missouri family were involved in a tragic accident Monday. Three adults are dead, and three children are recovering.

Around 11 a.m. a vehicle caring six passengers was traveling westbound on I-70 in Grove County, when it cut off another driver, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. The family’s vehicle began to swerve to the right and off into the ditch on the north side, then began sliding to the right and then to the left.

Witnesses said the vehicle then spun around crossing both westbound lanes of traffic and ended up rolling multiple times. The vehicle finally came to rest on the driver side in the median.

Police said 56-year-old Mark Groom, 56-year-old Margaret Groom and 84-year-old Richard Nieweg died in the crash. Three children, two six-year-old boys and a 10-year-old girl, survived.

The relationships between the three adults are not yet known, but they are all from Lee’s Summit. The three surviving children all had the last name of Groom.

On Monday night FOX 4’s Katie Banks stopped by the family’s home, but no one was there. Neighbors of the family said they were shocked and saddened to hear of the crash and said they would be praying for the family.
