LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. — Residents in the Oak Hill South neighborhood in Lee’s Summit were out in force on Thursday, making the mess from yesterday’s tornado a bit more manageable.
The neighborhood was one of the hardest hit from the storms which hit the area on Wednesday evening, leaving a lot of tree and roof damage but fortunately no injuries. Isabella Martin, 6, and her family suffered tree damage in their front yard from the storm, which she described as scary.
“I heard this big boom and the trees were knocking down,” said Martin, whose father spent Thursday trimming and lifting damaged tree limbs out of the front yard. “I was just down at the basement and watching the news.”
Next door, downed tree limbs buried three cars in the driveway. Austin Burh, 20, returned home from college just in time for the cleanup work.
“I actually came home as soon as they were doing it, so it was horrible timing,” said Burh. “We’re all safe, nothing hit the house. I don’t think it’s going to be too big of a deal. The trash getting picked up will be a little annoying but I think we’ll be alright. Hopefully the insurance company takes care of everything.”
But while the grown-ups work to clean up the neighborhood, young Isabella Martin has her mind on bigger matters.
“Now we can’t play outside because the trees are all knocked down,” said Martin.
