LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. – A local woman’s piece of art is gaining international attention.

Tina Garrett, who has only been painting for three years, is a finalist for ‘Figurativas 2015,’ one of Spain’s most prestigious international painting competitions.

“There were some days where I just felt like everything was flowing well and I would work until 11 at night and there were other days where I would do a lot of standing and looking and just making small marks,” Garrett said.

The model in the painting is also a Lee’s Summit native. The 13-year-old said it was her first modeling gig and she can’t wait to do more down the road.

“It’s really amazing because I remember taking the pictures and so it’s been a journey kind of seeing it being created,” said Rachel Geringer.

Monday, the painting, “String of Pearls,” gets shipped to Barcelona. Garrett said she will find out by August 1 if it won. If the painting wins the competition, it will hang inside The Museum of Modern Art Europe.
