LENEXA, Kan. – A police officer in Lenexa will run his 52nd marathon in less than 52 weeks on Sunday, November 24.
Officer Bob Schluben has run through freezing cold, blistering heat, snow and rain, over rocks, hills, and everywhere in between. On Sunday he will cross the finish line for the 52nd time in less than one year.
“It’s going to feel pretty neat. I mean it’s going to be a great feeling, it’s going to be a long journey,” said Schluben.
He decided to run 52 marathons this year, which is a total of 1362.4 miles. He says he doesn’t run for himself, but rather for his community and the organizations that help his community. Currently he is raising money and awareness for the Sunflower House, which helps abused children.
“If you have a reason to run, something that’s bigger than yourself, there’s nothing that says that you can’t do it,” he said. “It’s such an undertaking and it’s just an unbelievable commitment to the children we serve.”
Many along the way have called him crazy or do not believe what he has actually accomplished. However those who do know what he’s gone through have thanked him, especially those at the Sunflower House, where he went just a little less than a week before running his final marathon.

While the accolades are appreciated, he made it clear that it’s not about the medals for him. It’s about doing good in the community and inspiring others, like his sons, to do the same.
“I hope that they learn, you know, stand up for what you believe in and that you can make a difference,” he said.
Schluben is also raising money for S.A.F.E. or the Surviving Spouse and Family Endowment Fund, which raises money for the families of first responders who have died while on duty.
