Small Business Saturday was important for businesses across the metro. Local businesses hoped to cash in on holiday dollars before Cyber Monday rolls around.
Several shoppers chose to contribute to the local economy instead of shopping at chain retailers on Saturday. The local shops in a strip mall in Overland Park say they had a steady flow off foot traffic on Saturday.
In fact, some stores offered sales especially for Small Business Saturday. Managers say they saw more customers in 2011 who were aware of Small Business Saturday and knew the importance of buying locally.
“A lot of people interested,” said Anita Daniels, The Culinary Center. “Really they’re new and coming out and saying how nice it was to be here rather than the mall, and it’s a variety. The parking is right to the door.”
The U.S. Senate recently designation November 26 as Small Business Saturday. It took off when American Express got involved offering its cardholders a $25 credit for a purchase of $25 or more at a small business in 2010.
