KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A group of Kansas City firefighters and first responders did a little more than answering calls Sunday.
Members at fire Station 29 off East 63rd near The Paseo made a little boy feel like one of their own Sunday. Four-year-old Isaiah suffers from Vanishing White Matter disorder, a brain disease that hasn’t left him much time.
The Make a Wish Foundation partnered with the KCMO Fire Department to welcome the boy and his family. They showed them around, let him see the inside of emergency vehicles, and gave the boy his own firefighter hat.
“They’re used to serving the community in all sorts of ways and this is something that they certainly didn’t mind doing,” Chief Paul Berardi said.
Firefighter Same Belgiere said, “It was touching. It’s real yeah, thinking that my daughter is the same age and seeing this little boy who is pretty much infatuated with the firemen and the fire trucks.”
The boy’s mother Bethany Jones said, “At grandma’s house he was listening to a fire truck song over and over again. We’re just very, very excited, just for him, and I think that he’s very excited just because we can’t just taking care of him, we can’t really do a lot of things like this for him so just having the people to help us be able to visit all of these places and do everything in one day is a pretty big deal for him.”
The crews also took Isaiah and his family to Union Station and Crown Center.
