KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City man has been charged in the death of a five-month-old baby.
Keith Nelson, 42, has been charged with Assault 1st Degree and Endangering Welfare of Child in the death of five-month-old Za’Vion Dunmore.
Court records show the baby was taken to the hospital on Monday. A CAT scan of the baby’s head revealed injuries consistent with head trauma.
Prosecutors say that Nelson told Kansas City Police different stories about what happened while he was caring for the baby. Nelson said the baby slipped from his grasp and struck its head on a vanity.
Prosecutors are awaiting the results of medical examiner’s report before deciding whether to pursue other charges. Some of those test results could take several weeks, prosecutors said.
According to court records, Nelson was previously convicted in Jackson County of endangering the welfare of a child in 2002, and was sentenced to four years in prison.
Prosecutors have recommended a $250,000 cash-only bond for Nelson.
