OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — A 46-year-old Kansas man faces charges for allegedly sexually assaulting a child 11 years ago.
Gabino Vidal, Jr., faces aggravated felony sex with a child under the age of 14 and aggravated felony sodomy with a child under the age of 14 charges in connection to the alleged attacks on a then-12-year-old female family member in Overland Park between April 1 and May 18th of 2001.
Authorities say that the delay in charges stem from the fact that Vidal had to be tracked down in Mexico and extradited back to the U.S. to face charges.
“In this case, its very serious charges involving a minor child,” said Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe. “Because of the serious nature of those charges we decided it was worth the time and money to bring him back to face justice.”
Vidal is now in custody in the Johnson County Jail in Olathe in lieu of $500,000 cash-only bond.
“He’s a Mexican national with no ties to the U.S.,” said Howe. “We felt like a higher bond would be appropriate.”
If found guilty, Vidal could face anywhere from 16 to 100 years in prison.
