KANSAS CITY, Mo. — If he recovers, a 23-year-old Kansas City man faces kidnapping and armed criminal action charges in Clay County for allegedly holding a hostage at a CVS store in the 4900 block of NE Vivion Road Wednesday night.
Kansas City police say they shot Brandon Sampson during the ordeal when they say he lunged toward them with a sharp-edged object.
Police say when they arrived, they could see through the glass doors that the suspect was holding a female employee hostage inside the store.
According to the charging documents, the victim told police the man entered the store at about 9:30 p.m. and told everyone to get down on the ground and ordered her to get the money out of the register and then quickly yelled at her to stop. He had on a coat and had his right hand in his right coat pocket, and was pointing his right hand toward the victim.
She said the man began pacing and cussing and yelling “they better hurry up and get here.” He also yelled “I’m gonna f***ing kill everybody, everybody’s gonna die.”
She said the man grabbed her and began taking her outside, but she broke away from him, and that’s when she says she heard a shot fired.
Ten witnesses corroborated the victim’s statement, including other employees and customers.
Police say the suspect had a sharp-edged weapon in hand. When police approached the sliding front doors, the suspect made an aggressive move, police said.
“He lunged at the officers with some sort of knife,” said Tye Grant, KCMO Police. “That’s when the officers shot him.”
Sampson is also charged with making a terroristic threat, a class D felony.
Sampson remained in critical condition on Thursday.
