KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Police Department continues to deal with the loss of one of their own. Early Saturday morning, Michael Chou, 29, a crime scene technician, was killed in a car accident in front of his office.
On Sunday, his colleagues were remembering him and were trying to deal with the loss of someone they say was a stand out among stand outs.
“We couldn’t believe it was one of our own. We couldn’t believe it was Michael,” said Crime Lab Director Linda Netzel.
Chou was killed in a traffic accident just minutes after finishing his shift Saturday morning. Police said the accident occurred at 3 a.m. when a black BMW driven by Larneal Davis of Independence, Mo., was traveling at a high rate of speed and collided with Chou’s Honda Civic. Chou’s car was split in two as a result of the impact.
Among his accomplishments, Chou had earned a bachelor of science degree in cellular molecular biology and held a master’s degree in advanced crime scene investigation. He had also completed two years towards his PhD in criminal justice.
Netzel was the young technician’s supervisor. She said the night Chou was killed was his third shift working nights. He worked hard for two years to get that position after working the day shift since he was hired.
Davis, the other driver involved in the accident, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.
Chou’s family lives in Kansas City. Memorial services for him has not been announced.
