EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. — Friends and family are remembering a young Excelsior Springs man killed Sunday night when he was hit by a car in Independence.
Police say that at about 10:30 p.m, two vehicles heading east on I-70 crashed near the Crysler bridge.
According to investigators, one of the vehicles came to a stop facing westbound against the concrete barrier wall. The young man and young woman inside the vehicle got out to check on the driver of the second vehicle, which had come to rest in the left and center eastbound lanes. As they approached on foot, both were struck by a third eastbound vehicle.
The man, identified by family and friends as Gabe Mills, 17, was killed and his girlfriend was taken to the hospital to be treated for serious injuries. Gabe’s family says he was an organ donor and his organs have already saved two lives. Five more people could receive his organs, as well.
His family told FOX 4 that he was a student at Excelsior Springs High School, a lifeguard at Worlds of Fun and knew CPR, and had a helpful, giving spirit. They believe he was eager to help the person in the other car, when he was struck and killed.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
A GoFundMe account has been set up for family expenses related to his death. https://www.gofundme.com/2f5w72k
